It is not uncommon at all to hear that there is some catalyst in their life that turned their understanding of God completely upside down and forced them to see Him in a different light then they had prior to that circumstance.
That is very much the case in my own story. Through a circumstance I never imagined could happen I was forced to see a loving, compassionate God that I had never seen before. He was no longer simply just and omnipotent. I came face to face with a grace that had previously been beyond my comprehension. I would never have chosen for that circumstance to have been part of my story. But, in hindsight, I could never know God the way I do today had it not been for that chapter of my life.
No matter who we are we do have to come to terms with God in our own way but it seems that it happens on His terms not ours.
