My 3 yr old asks a question all the time right now that makes me smile. He will try to do something that he is simply not yet equipped physically to do and then he'll look at me and say "I'm too big, Mommy?" Well, what he means is "am I too little to do this?" but his little 3 yr old mind is still wrestling down the concepts of big and little.
I have a very bad habit of trying things for which I am "too big" as my son would say. And in my mind he got it right. In my mind I make myself bigger, stronger, smarter, wiser, more efficient, more powerful and I think I can do whatever it is. You would think I would learn my lesson, but just last week I found myself trying to tackle a too-big-for-one-person project all by myself. I ended up sweaty and physically spent and I didn't accomplish my task. While I am working on any of these grand schemes of mine there is always that point at which I feel very weak, very ill-equipped, very small and very much a failure.
The reality is, there are things that we were just designed to do together. I believe that walking through our spiritual journeys is one of those. I believe that God uses multiple influences to communicate His love to us. For me, it wasn't just one person's conversation that helped me across the line of faith, it was several different conversations and experiences involving lots of people.
As we share God's love with others we can partner with each other and as the church do it together. Yes, there will be a personal responsibility that you have. Like Douglas explained last Sunday, you are uniquely equipped to love the people in your relational world - equipped in a way that the church as an organization cannot be. But as well, there are ways that the church can provide tools, information and events that can help to show God's love to those same people.
We were meant to do this together. And... the great news is, doing things together always makes things easier and more enjoyable in the process.
As we move into fall, here are somethings Cypress is doing to help provide you with "Fishing Gear":
October 10, 7:00 PM - Barnes & Miner Comedy Night
October 11 - November 1, Sunday services - Staying in Love (series)
And don't forget, this concept of not walking your spiritual journey alone extends to you as well. It doesn't end when you cross the line of faith. If you're not already, get into a small group and watch how God transforms you through deep relationships with other people learning on their spiritual journey.
